Quarter 2, Week 3 in Third Grade!

Happy Monday 3rd Grade Families, 

We are looking forward to another great week of learning and growth in third grade! Thank you for continuing to support your scholars as they develop strong habits and a love for learning.

Literature: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
We will begin reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on Monday. Please make sure your scholar brings their copy of the book to school each day. We are so excited to journey through Narnia together!

Narnia Celebration Volunteer Lottery - Monday, October 27 - Monday, November 3

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe volunteer sign-up is now open. We’re so excited to welcome volunteers to take part in this magical event! Parents selected in the volunteer 

• On the Horizon: Narnia Celebration  Our Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Celebration will take place on Thursday, December 11th, from 1:30–3:10 p.m. Parent volunteers are invited to help bring Narnia to life across our classrooms and hallway. 

Field Day – Thursday, October 30

Our Third and Fourth Grade Field Day will take place on Thursday, October 30. Students will participate in team games and outdoor activities. Please ensure your scholar comes dressed in comfortable athletic wear and tennis shoes.

Math Test – Friday, October 31
Students will take their Chapter 3 Math Test on Friday, October 31. This test will cover multiplication and division of multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. A review will be provided in class to help students prepare.

We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm our scholars are showing each day and look forward to another productive and joyful week!

Quarter 2, Week 2 in Third Grade!

We had such a wonderful time meeting with you all during Parent-Teacher Conferences last week. Thank you for taking the time to partner with us in your child’s learning. Your support makes all the difference.

This week, we are excited to share a few important updates and upcoming dates.

Character Dress Up Day
Students may dress as their favorite character from a classic story we have read at GHNO or as a historical figure we study.

• Costume Proposal Slips Due: Wednesday, October 22

• Character Dress Up Day: Friday, October 24
  We look forward to seeing the creativity and thoughtful connections your scholars make with their chosen characters and figures.

Field Day
Third and Fourth Grade Field Day will take place on Thursday, October 30th. More details about attire and supplies will be shared soon. We are looking forward to a fun and active day with our students! Information about volunteer opportunities and snack/water donations will be in the weekly email from Headmaster Mitchel.

In the Classroom 

Little House on the Prairie Test
Students will take their Little House on the Prairie test on Wednesday, October 22nd. The Little House on the Prairie Study Guide will be reviewed on Monday to help them prepare.

Math Update: Division Begins
This week, we are beginning our unit on division. Students will explore how division relates to multiplication and practice using different strategies to solve problems.

IXL Practice for Math
For additional math practice, students can log in to IXL through their Clever portal using the QR code glued into their agenda. This is not homework or a requirement, but it is an optional resource available for families who wish to support extra skill practice at home. Please refer to the IXL letter that was sent home in your scholar's Graded Work folder last week.

New Poem 
We will begin practicing our new poem, due on November 14th. 

The First Thanksgiving of all

Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,

And Patience (very small),

Stood by the table giving thanks

The first Thanksgiving of all.

There was very little for them to eat,

Nothing special and nothing sweet;

Only bread and a little broth,

And a bit of fruit (and no tablecloth):

But Peace and Mercy and Jonathan

And Patience, in a row,

Stood up and asked a blessing on

Thanksgiving long ago.

Thankful they were their ship had come

Safely across the sea;

Thankful they were for hearth and home,

And kin and company;

They were glad of broth to go with their bread,

Glad their apples were round and red,

Glad of mayflowers they would bring

Out of the woods again next spring.

So Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,

And Patience (very small),

Stood up gratefully giving thanks

The first Thanksgiving of all.

We are looking forward to another joyful and focused week in third grade as we continue to grow in knowledge, confidence, and curiosity.

Welcome to Quarter Two of Third Grade!

 Parents, please be on the lookout for narrative writing assignments coming home soon! Students are beginning their work with personal narratives, and we are excited to see their creativity shine through their writing.

In history, we have just begun our new unit on Ancient Rome. Students are already asking thoughtful questions and showing curiosity about what life was like in this great civilization.
