Year at a Glance
Below you'll find a summary of what your scholar will be learning in Math class throughout the year. We've linked the School to Home Letters for each chapter these are great resources for when you're helping with homework and your scholar says, "That's not how we did it in class". Now you'll know exactly how we did it in class.
Quarter One: Chapters 1 and 2.
Chapter 1: Numbers to 10,000
Students will understand place value within 10,000 and will be able to write numbers in standard, expanded and word forms. Students will be able to analyze number patterns and round numbers using a number line. School to Home Letter.
Chapter 2: Addition and Subtraction Within 10,000
Students will be able to add and subtract within 10,000, both with and without renaming. Students will solve word problems using bar models. School to Home Letter
Quarter Two: Chapters 3 and 4
Chapter 3: Multiplication and Division
Students will understand that multiplication is repeated addition and division is creating equal groups and be able to multiply and divide by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Students will solve word problems using bar models. School to Home Letter
Chapter 4: Multiplication and Division of 6, 7, 8 and 9
Students will be able to multiply by 6, 7, 8 and 9. Students will solve two-step word problems involving the four operations and bar models. School to Home Letter.
Quarter Three: Chapters 5 through 8.
Chapter 5: Time
Students draw on their knowledge of time to read, write and tell time to the hour and minute on an analog clock. Students will determine intervals between two times of day, and eventually work their way up to finding and using duration in word problems that involve addition and subtraction of time. School to Home Letter
Chapter 6: Area and Perimeter
Students will measure area in square units as well as using multiplication to find the area of squares, rectangles, and composite figures. Students will be able to find the perimeter of a rectangle. They will also solve word problems involving area and perimeter. School to Home Letter
Chapter 7: Fractions
Students will understand that a fraction represents a part of a whole. They will begin by representing fractions using models and number lines, and then compare fractions using equivalent fractions and find a fraction of a set. School to Home Letter
Chapter 8: Mass and Liquid Volume
Students will learn that the mass of objects can be measured and estimated in kilograms and grams using different tools, and that capacity of containers can be measured in liters. Students will extend this knowledge to compare mass and volume as well as solving one step word problems. School to Home Letter
Quarter Four: Chapters 9 and 10
Chapter 9: Data
Students will interpret and make picture graphs and bar graphs with scales. They will apply their previous understanding of making line plots with whole number units to represent data on line plots with fractional measurements. They will solve word problems involving the four operations. School to Home Letter
Chapter 10: Shapes
Students will categorize triangles and quadrilaterals. Students will gain vocabulary to describe and categorize angles. They will understand that quadrilaterals may have shared characteristics and be able to describe and draw shapes based on attributes of side lengths and angle types. School to Home Letter
