New Poem: “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” by William Shakespeare
We will begin practicing our new poem this week. Students will work on memorization and expression in class. The poem will be due on December 18th.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answer’d it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest—
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men—
Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
He hath brought many captives home to Rome,
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And sure he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

We look forward to another productive and joyful week together.

Welcome to Quarter 2 Week 5!

Quarter 2, Week 5 in Third Grade!

We are looking forward to a wonderful week ahead as we continue to grow in knowledge, gratitude, and community during this special season.

Concert – Friday
We are so excited for our third-grade concert on Friday! We can’t wait to see our scholars shine as they share their hard work and joyful voices on stage.

Tip: Try to grab your concert attire ahead of time. You don't want to end up having to hunt down a new pair of dress shoes at the last minute!

Poem Due – Friday
Our current poem is due this Friday. Please ensure your scholar continues to practice at home as we focus on memorization and expressive recitation in class.

“The First Thanksgiving of All” by Nancy Byrd Turner
We will begin practicing our new poem this week, which will be due on November 14th.

Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,
And Patience (very small),
Stood by the table giving thanks
The first Thanksgiving of all.

There was very little for them to eat,
Nothing special and nothing sweet;
Only bread and a little broth,
And a bit of fruit (and no tablecloth):
But Peace and Mercy and Jonathan
And Patience, in a row,
Stood up and asked a blessing on
Thanksgiving long ago.

Thankful they were their ship had come
Safely across the sea;
Thankful they were for hearth and home,
And kin and company;
They were glad of broth to go with their bread,
Glad their apples were round and red,
Glad of mayflowers they would bring
Out of the woods again next spring.

So Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,
And Patience (very small),
Stood up gratefully giving thanks
The first Thanksgiving of all.
