We are looking forward to another wonderful week in third grade! Here are a few important reminders and academic updates for the week.

Typing Practice

If your child would like extra typing practice at home, they may log in to TypingClub at www.typingclub.com using their Clever QR code glued inside their agenda. Typing practice will never be a homework assignment or requirement, but it is available as an optional resource if this kind of activity interests your student and is something your family approves of.

IXL will never be a homework assignment or requirement, but it is available as an optional resource for students who enjoy additional practice and families who would like to use it at home.

Academic Updates

Grammar: We will continue analyzing adverbs in sentences and begin procedural writing. Scholars will have an Adverb Quiz on Wednesday.

History: We will begin our new unit on the Earliest Americans. Scholars will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

Science: We study of Life Cycles, Traits, and Variations as we prepare for our upcoming science assessment on Tuesday 9/29

Math: We will continue building our multiplication skills, focusing on understanding multiplication as repeated addition and developing fluency with our facts.

Literature: We will continue reading Little House on the Prairie. As we read, scholars will discuss character traits and practice writing and identifying strong summaries.

We look forward to another joyful and productive week together as we continue growing in knowledge, responsibility, and perseverance.

Individual Picture Day
Individual Picture Day is Wednesday. We look forward to seeing all of our scholars ready for their school pictures!

Students will have a Grammar Quiz on Friday. We will continue reviewing and practicing the skills they will need throughout the week.

Academic Updates

Literature: We will continue our Little House on the Prairie, focusing on careful reading, discussion, and comprehension.

Science: We will continue exploring our current science unit through observation, discussion, and hands on learning with our chickens and butterflies! Test 9/30

Math: We will begin our unit on multiplication. Emphasizing that it is repeated addition. 

Grammar/Writing: We will continue strengthening our grammar and writing skills throughout the week as we prepare for our Grammar Quiz on Friday.

Welcome to Quarter 1 Week 2!

We had a wonderful first week of third grade, and we are excited to begin Quarter 1, Week 2! This week, we will continue practicing our classroom routines and systems while diving more deeply into our academic subjects. We will also reflect on our first week together and discuss how perseverance and courage help us grow as learners.

Coming Up in Literature

On Monday, August 24, we will begin reading Little House on the Prairie! We are looking forward to starting our first novel together and exploring the adventures of the Ingalls family.

In our CKLA Literature unit, scholars will continue strengthening their reading comprehension skills by finding text evidence to support their answers.

Grammar and Writing

In Grammar and Writing, we will work on writing summaries and identifying the elements of a complete sentence. Scholars will have a Complete Sentence Quiz this week.

Math

In Math, we will continue our work with place value, comparing and ordering numbers, and number patterns. Scholars will have a Math Quiz on Friday covering these concepts.

Science

In Science, we will continue learning about life cycles. Scholars will get to see this process in action through our lima bean observation experiment, as we observe and record changes over time.

Curriculum Night

Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Curriculum Night on Wednesday, August 26, from 6:00–8:00 p.m.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about third grade, meet the teachers, and hear about the exciting learning we have planned for the year.

Welcome to Third Grade! 

Thank you to everyone who came to Meet the Teacher on Friday. We were thrilled to welcome you all into our classrooms and begin building our third-grade community! 

The first day of school is Tuesday, August 11th. We cannot wait to welcome your scholar into our classrooms again! 

This week we're focusing on procedures, routines, and systems. All things which we will need to practice so we can have an orderly and joyful year! Part of our dismissal routine is allowing students to read silently after they have completed their homework. Please send your scholar to school with a silent reading book. You might also want to send your scholar a healthy snack. 

All About Me Bag Reminder: If you attended Meet the Teacher, your child received a Me Bag in their folder. They may fill it with 3 small items that represent who they are (such as a favorite photograph, a treasured keepsake, or a special trinket) and bring it to share with the class on Tuesday. Students who were unable to attend are also encouraged to participate by bringing their own small bag from home with 3 small items to share.

As we will need perseverance this week in learning and relearning our procedures, we will also be reading our poem for the week:

Welcome to Quarter 4 Week 7!

We’re in the final stretch of the school year, and it’s been so special to watch how much our scholars have grown academically, socially, and in their confidence. They’ve worked hard, taken on challenges, and continued to show what they’re capable of each day. We’re incredibly proud of them and all they’ve accomplished so far. As we head into these last few weeks, we’re encouraging them to stay focused, keep up the strong effort, and finish the year just as strong as they started.

Isabel met an enormous bear,

Isabel, Isabel, didn't care;

Welcome to Quarter 4 Week 4!

 We have a lot of big events coming up in the third grade, the most exciting is our scholar’s first STAAR Test of the year! 

Reading STAAR: Thursday, April 9th
They will be expected to answer approximately 40 multiple choice questions, write two short paragraphs, and one essay. That’s a tall order for a small person so we’ll need to set them up for success! 

To help our students perform their best on the STAAR tests, we will not have homework the day before the test. You can also support your child by ensuring they get plenty of sleep and providing a filling breakfast on the morning of the test.

 Another important way to support your student is to encourage them to do their best while also helping calm their fears and reminding them that the test is just one way to show what they know. Lowering the stakes and keeping the morning positive can make a big difference. We know there’s a lot more to them than one test can tell us!

Welcome to Quarter 4 Week 3!

Thank you so much to our parent volunteers for helping make our field trip such a success! We are incredibly grateful for your time, tons of energy, and support! Our class had so much fun exploring new ideas and having the freedom to direct that exploration with incredibly watchful, kind and joyful supervision made their day. We can't thank you enough!

We have two short weeks ahead. There will be no school this Friday in observance of Good Friday, and no school the following Monday for Easter.

Regarding STAAR, you may have received an invitation for summer school. This invitation is simply to reserve a spot in the event that your child does not pass the STAAR assessment. It does not mean your child is required to attend, and attendance is not mandatory regardless of their results.

The STAAR Interim assessment was administered in January and included a wide range of topics such as fractions, geometry, measurement, and data, many of which had not yet been taught at that point in the school year. Because of this, some students who are currently performing very well in class may have been identified as students who could be at risk of not passing.

A more accurate reflection of your child’s current progress and readiness can be seen in their ongoing classwork, as well as their weekly quizzes and tests. These assessments are aligned with the material we have taught and continue to build on throughout the year.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about your child’s progress. I am always happy to provide additional insight and support.

What We’re Learning:
Math: We will begin our unit on collecting data and representing it through charts, graphs, and tables.
Science: We will begin our unit on light and sound.

 We are so excited for our upcoming third grade field trip to the Witte Museum this Wednesday, March 25th! It promises to be a fun and memorable day of learning.

Field Trip Lunch Reminder:
If your child will be bringing a lunch, please pack it in a disposable paper lunch sack with their full name clearly written on it. This helps keep everything organized and makes lunchtime run smoothly for all students. If you are unable to provide a paper sack, please let me know and I will be happy to provide one.

Our third graders will get to enjoy a Classroom Campout this Friday to celebrate that they practiced IXL math outside of school more than any other grade level! Their hard work truly paid off, and we are excited to celebrate their effort together.

Jimmy Jet And His TV Set

I'll tell you the story of Jimmy Jet--

And you know what I tell you is true.

He loved to watch his TV set

Almost as much as you.

He watched all day, he watched all night

Till he grew pale and lean,

From "The Early Show" to "The Late Show"

And all the shows in between.

He watched till his eyes were frozen wide,

And his bottom grew into his chair.

And his chin turned into a tuning dial,

And antennae grew out of his hair.

And his brains turned into TV tubes,

And his face to a TV screen.

And two knobs saying "vert." and "horiz."

Grew where his ears had been.

And he grew a plug that looked like a tail

So we plugged in little Jim.

And now instead of him watching TV

We all sit around and watch him.

Viking Celebration – Thursday, February 19th
Our Viking Celebration will take place on Thursday, February 19th as we wrap up our history unit. Students are eager to showcase their learning! To Volunteer 

For the security of your children, if you plan to volunteer/chaperone at ANY school event, you MUST go to the PSO website and do these 3 things at least three weeks before the event:

1. Submit a consent for a Background Check

2. Download and Print FERPA Acknowledgment Form and PSO Confidentiality   Agreement

3. Watch the training video covering these subjects

It takes time to process through our district office for clearance. We need one every school year, 

regardless of if you completed one last year. If you have not submitted one for this year, you will be asked to remove your name from the sign- up list for the field trip. Once completed, send the forms to school in your child’s folder. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Kim, Shanna Siller, or Rossanna Diaz-Knack. 

In addition to our room reps we will need five volunteers per class to help chaperone. Please see the Signup Genius and consider volunteering or donating/lending supplies. This is the link to the volunteer lottery.

The five parent volunteers selected in the lottery and the backup volunteers will be contacted on Monday February 23rd .
